What is "SHOW ME" "TELL ME" QUESTION in driving tests?

In simple terms “Show Me, Tell Me” questions are part of the UK practical driving test. They are designed to check that you understand basic vehicle safety and can carry out simple safety checks while driving. You’ll be asked 2 vehicle safety questions during your test.

"Tell Me" questions:

At the start of your test, before you begin driving, the examiner will ask you one Tell Me question. You only need to explain how you would carry out a safety check (you don’t actually do it).
Example: “Tell me how you’d check the brakes are working before a journey.”

"Show Me" questions:

During the driving part of your test, while you’re on the road, the examiner will ask you one Show Me question. You’ll need to physically demonstrate how to operate a control safely while driving.
Example:Show me how you wash and clean the front windscreen.”

Tell Me Questions

Tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.

Check the car’s handbook or the sticker inside the driver’s door. Use a reliable pressure gauge when tyres are cold, test all tyres including the spare, and replace the valve caps after.

Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.

Press the brake pedal; it should feel firm, not soft or spongy. As you move off, test the brakes gently. The car should stop smoothly without pulling to one side.

Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in a crash.

The top of the head restraint should be level with your eyes or the top of your ears and close to the back of your head. Some cars may have fixed head restraints.

Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure they have sufficient tread depth and the general condition is safe.

Inspect the tyres to make sure there are no cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6 mm across the middle three-quarters of the tyre and all around.

Tell me how you’d check the headlights and tail lights are working (without exiting the vehicle).

Turn on the light switch, with the ignition on if needed. Walk around the vehicle or ask someone to confirm they are working.

Tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

The ABS warning light on the dashboard will stay lit if there is a fault.

Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

Turn the steering wheel gently while starting the engine. The wheel should feel lighter. Alternatively, move the wheel slightly as you drive off to see if it turns smoothly.

Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use them (without exiting the vehicle).

Turn on the dipped headlights and then press the fog light button. A warning light will appear on the dashboard. Fog lights should only be used when visibility is low.

Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.

Use the headlight stalk or switch to turn on the main beam. A blue warning light will show on the dashboard.

Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check the engine has sufficient oil.

Locate the dipstick, pull it out, wipe it, reinsert it, then check the oil level is between the minimum and maximum markers.

Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check the engine has sufficient coolant.

Locate the coolant reservoir and check the level is between the minimum and maximum markings. Top up with the correct coolant if needed, but only when the engine is cool.

Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Locate the brake fluid reservoir and check the fluid is between the high and low markings.

Show Me Questions

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the rear windscreen?

Use the control stalk or button to spray washer fluid and wipe the rear window.

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you wash and clean the front windscreen?

Pull or press the wiper stalk to spray washer fluid onto the front windscreen.

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d switch on your dipped headlights?

Turn the headlight switch to the dipped beam position.

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d set the rear demister?

Press the rear demister button to clear the back window.

- When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d operate the horn?

Press the centre of the steering wheel to sound the horn.

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen?

Turn on the fan and direct warm air towards the windscreen to clear it.

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d open and close the side window?

Use the window switch or handle to lower and raise the side window.
